How to stay on top of laundry is possible. In my house it seemed as if our washer and dryer was running non stop. If we didn’t do laundry often, we’d find ourselves piled up to our ears in laundry. I was tired of feeling overwhelmed with laundry and realized that I had to find how to stay on top of laundry that worked for my family of 6.
You don’t have to dread doing laundry. Just follow these 5 tips on how to stay on top of laundry and you’ll find your not as overwhelmed.
1. Get a Laundry Sorter basket.
This laundry sorter is perfect because once the basket is full, I know it’s the perfect load for my large capacity washer. I sort laundry the following way — Whites, Colors and Towels. If my color load is too big, I’ll throw our jeans in with the towels. I’ve found that the lint from towels don’t really hang on to the blue jean material so this works out pretty well. If you’ve got new clothes, wash them by themselves for the first few washes just in case they bleed. After a few washes it’ll be fine to place in with your regular colored load.
2. Don’t overfill your washer.
Your clothes don’t clean as well, plus your dryer gets overloaded and you’ll find that your clothes come out wrinkled and you’re not really saving anytime. Your actually spending more time since you’ll be ironing your wrinkled clothes.
3. Get on a routine.
I could do a load of laundry every day, but I find that I need a break from it. I do laundry on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we do two loads a day. I do sheets and linens every other week on the off days. The first thing I do in the morning before I do anything else is throw a load of laundry in the washer. I know it takes about 45 minutes for my washer to go through it’s cycle. By the time I’ve gotten the kids breakfast and lunch made for the day, it’s time to throw the load into the dryer. I’ll throw the second load into the washer and drive the kids to school. By the time I get home my load of laundry is almost dried with the second load being ready to go into the dryer. I’ll fold the clothes and let them sit until the last load is dry and folded. On the days that I can’t fold them right away, I’ll take the clothes out of the basket, separate the clothes and lay them flat on the bed so they don’t wrinkle. Then when the kids get home from school we all work together to fold and put the clothes away.
45 minutes seems to be the magic number for my washer and dryer. I can start laundry before dinner, my favorite show, before I shower and get ready for the day etc. Find your magic number and make laundry your first task.
4. Invest in a Flip and Fold.
Folding shirts are a pain but with this flip and fold I can have the kids help and know that their shirts are getting folded right. Plus the flip and fold, keeps the shirts nice and tight and I don’t have to worry about ironing them.
5. Limit your kids to the amount of clothes they wear and the towels they use.
My kids wear uniforms to school and when they come home they want to change into their play clothes, but they don’t play in them. They’ll just sit around the house for a few hours before bed. If that’s the case, I’ll make sure they fold their play clothes and wear them the next day.
These 5 tips on how to say on top of laundry are just a few ways that make our life easier. Also I want to remind you that you should also clean your washer from time to time, if your washer is dirty, your clothes will smell dirty.
I’d love to hear your tips. Comment below and tell me your tips on how to stay on top of laundry.
How to Shred Chicken in Less than 3 minutes, especially when your chicken is steaming hot.
I buy a lot of chicken in bulk. It’s a great way for me to save time and money. What I’ll do is cook most of my chicken at once, this way when I go to make dinner I can make it quickly. Having shredded chicken on hand only takes a short time to defrost it in the microwave and I can usually have dinner prepared in less than 20 minutes.
