How to have a successful yard sale.  This may be something your are thinking of in order to pay off some of that holiday debt. Having a yard sale is a great way to make some extra money, so I put together 35 tips on how to have a successful yard sale.

I asked the savviest people I know their ideas on how to have a successful yard sale and here are the 35 tips we came up with.

  1. Advertise in your local newspaper and on Craigslist.  
  2. Get Group Yard Sales together, especially with your neighbors.  This will help attract more people and help save you the cut the cost with advertising.
  3. Takes some pictures of the items you are selling and provide a link in the ad of photos.  You can use sharing sites like Photobucket, Flickr and so on.
  4. Make Lots of Signs.  List Big Items on your signs, such as:  Tools, Baby, Furniture etc..
  5. For your signs, use a bright background color and keep the colors consistent.
  6. Make Letter BIG!  Stand across the room and make sure you can read it.  Letters on your sign, should contain Big, Bold and Black lettering.
  7. Make a big sign that says You are Here!
  8. Have your yard sale around the 1st of the month.
  9. Consider the weather.
  10. Make your displays attractive as possible
  11. Try to get everything up off the ground.
  12. Group Like items together
  13. Hang up your clothes and make sure they are clean.
  14. Don’t have enough tables?  Use totes and boxes as tables instead.
  15. Keep it simple, people don’t want to dig through a bunch of stuff.
  16. Place large items near the curb
  17. Color Code your pricing – Use plain dot stickers
  18. Don’t ask for a lot, people want deals, not somewhat reduced retail prices.
  19. Keep prices under 50% of retail.
  20. Create a price layout plan, so everyone helping out knows the prices.
  21. Have a least 2 people working at all times.
  22. Keep your money with you at all times.
  23. Don’t use a cash box.
  24. Run larger bills inside and place it in a safe place.
  25. Get lots of small bills and change.
  26. Don’t accept large bills such as $50’s and $100’s.
  27. Go with your gut feeling if a bill seems fishy.
  28. Don’t let people inside to use your bathroom.
  29. Save all of your grocery bags to use for the items you sell.
  30. Offer something free with purchase, such as balloons for the kids.  You don’t need helium, just blow them up, the kids will love it.
  31. Have a free box to pick out items from.  Spend $5 get 1 free item, Spend $10 and get 2 free items and so on.
  32. Offer fill a bag items.  $5 to fill a bag.  This will help you quickly sell off books, nick knacks, etc..
  33. Make Signs that say the following:  All Sales Final, No Returns, Items sold As-Is, Cash Only – No Checks, No Bathroom.
  34. Wait until the last day to discount items.  Start discounting them 2 hours before you shut down.
  35. Pack up all remaining items and donate them.

Here are 5 tips to help you find ways to get money;

  1. Do you have a bunch of stuff?  Make money with Yard Sales.  You can also sell items online.  Just go through your personal belonging and sell items you don’t need.
  2. Can you sacrifice your time?  If so, make money with taking on a 2nd Job.  Some ideas would be to deliver pizza, take on a paper route, babysit and so on.
  3. Do you have a hobby? Such as: Sewing, Carpentry, Mechanical  Graphic Designs?  Make money with your favorite pastime and turn it into a source of income.
  4. Are you a brainy-act?  Math-wizard?  Use your knowledge and make money with tutoring!
  5. Do you love being on the computer?  Make money with surveys.  It’s hideous work but filling out surveys can generate some extra income and is easy to do while your watching tv.
