One of the things I strive to do is to put God first in my life and it’s one of the things I struggle with everyday. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying out of sight, out of mind. Well, that statement plays true in my life when it comes to putting God first. Since I don’t see him it’s easier to forget to put him first. However, there are things that I will do, to ensure that I do put him first in my life.
One way I put God first is with my finances, by tithing 10% of our income. When I first started doing this, I treated it like a bill, I knew how much I needed to give and if I couldn’t come up with that amount, I waited until the next paycheck and completed my tithe. I convinced myself that God didn’t want me to pay a late fee and as long as I was tithing isn’t that what God really wanted? No, he doesn’t want or need my money. He wants me to put him first and did I really put God first? No.
Sometimes we can over think a situation, I went so far to seek approval from another. Having them agree with me, that what I was doing was the right thing, offered me comfort. However that comfort failed to come, because I failed to seek approval of the one who mattered. Once I realized this it was an amazing change. With putting God first in this area, I no longer considered my tithe a bill, I no longer worried about any late fees and whether these bills would get paid. I knew that I was on the right path.
God is working through my life and teaching me to put him first in everything that I do. He may be out of sight, but definitely not out of mind.
How do you make God first?
