My husband has been wanting to make homemade ice cream. We’ve been looking for an older style ice cream maker and a few weeks ago we found the perfect one at our local thrift store. We were so excited and couldn’t wait to start making some recipes.
After searching the internet and reviewing thousands of recipes a friend of our suggested a mock recipe of Ben and Jerry’s cream based mixture. This recipe was very good but it had way too much whipping cream in and was a little bland for us, but with modification we came up with this recipe and we think it will work great as a vanilla or standard base for adding more treats to our ice cream mixture.
Original Recipe:
2 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy or whipping cream
1 cup milk
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy or whipping cream
1 cup milk
Modified Recipe
2 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup fat free milk
1 tsp vanilla
*I’m not sure if we needed to adjust the whipping cream because of using fat free milk, but it worked for us!
Directions:
Whisk the eggs in a mxing bowl until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue to whisk until completely blended, about 1 minute more. Pour in the cream and milk and whisk to blend. Then following directions of your homemade ice cream machine.
This was an awesome non cook recipe too! You can serve it immediately if you want it like a soft serve ice cream, but my suggestion is to freeze it for a day and it’s wonderful.
Note: Making homemade ice cream is definitely not cheaper. I know I can find some great deals on the whipping cream and eggs and I’ll be able to reduce the cost, but overall there are a lot of pricey ingredients plus the added cost of ice and rock salt all of this can be quite expensive so we are also going try and use the kind of salt people use for water softeners and see if that will work instead of buying rock salt. As for the ice, I’ll need to freeze some ahead of time in to avoid buying ice. Overall, it’s very tasty and less preservatives are also a plus!! Not to mention it’s fun and a nice treat for the kids.
