Horse Fondant Cake

I made this horse fondant cake a few years ago.  In fact it was the first fondant cake I ever made.

The cake turned out fantastic.  I couldn’t have been more please with it.  However I’m not sure the time invested in it and how quick it got demolished was worth it.  3 hours to make.. 3 mins to eat..scarf..

Horse Fondant Cake

This cake was for my father-in-laws birthday and since he love horses we made him a horse using homemade marshmallow fondant.

We started by making a chocolate cake using 2, 8″ round pans.  We layered the cakes and covered the entire thing, including the center with frosting.

Then I made the marshmallow fondant and pulled about 1/4 of the fondant to use for the design.  The design I came up with was just an image I found of a horse head and used that as a template. I then used Wilton’s icing coloring gel and colored the fondant.

To make the braided rope look at the bottom of the cake, we used two long strips of fondant and twisted it to give it that look.  The horse shoes were u shapes that we flattened and poked holes in.  Overall the design of the cake was pretty simple to make.

Here is the recipe I used:

Marshmallow Fondant

Ingredients

  • 16 oz mini marshmallows
  • 2 lbs of powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup crisco
  • 3 tbs water.

Instructions

  1. Add 1/2 cup crisco and powerded sugar to Kitchen Aid Mixer using your dough hook blade.
  2. Place marshmallows and water in bowl and put in microwave for 1 min and 30 sec. Stir until all marshmallows are melted then add to mixer and mixer until all ingredients come together.
  3. Knead until consistency become play-doh like. Then wrap in plastic wrap and let sit for at least 24 hours at room tempature. This will help all ingredients blend together.

I love the way fondant cakes look and marshmallow fondant is one of the better tasting fondants out there.

Step 2:)  Cut the pound cake into 3 layers.

Step 3.)  Using Pastry Pride Ready To Whip Topping, it’s time to make the whipped cream.  The instructions on the Pastry Pride recommends you let the whip topping defrost in your fridge for 24 hours.  This will give you the best consistency of the whipped cream.  (However if you are in a pinch like I am and only have a frozen container, I’ll cheat and throw it in the microwave for a minute on high and shake the ingredients and then I’ll repeat the step for another 30-45 seconds.)  Now pour about 1/4 of the liquid from the container into a bowl.  Using your Kitchen Aid Mixer and wire whip, let it whip for about 1-2 minutes.

Step 4:) Spread whipped topping over the pound cake.

Step 6:) Assemble the pound cake back into it’s original form.  Then repeat Step 4 and 5  as you assemble it.
