Tide Washing Machine Cleaner caught my eye in a commercial. I had never heard of a washing machine cleaner and was curious to see if worked the same way those dishwasher cleaners did. My washer was so bad that I headed to the store to purchase a box of Tide Washing Machine Cleaner in hopes that it would actually clean my washer.
I’m ashamed to admit that we’ve owned the same washer for about 9 years and I never once cleaned it. I honestly never really thought to clean our washer and it wasn’t until our clothes started smelling like mildew that it really caught my attention that our washing machine was disgusting.
This is a not a sponsored post for Tide. I’m doing this review on my own because I needed the product and I really wanted to see if this product worked.
Tide Washing Machine Cleaner runs around $2.33 a packet, however Tide doesn’t sell them individually. I looked for the smallest box at the store. There was only one, which contained 5 packets.
The instructions were pretty simple, just set your washing machine to hot water, add the packet and run it through your normal cycle.
See how nasty my washer is:
But that wasn’t even the worst of the photos, When I pulled off the fabric softener dispenser, I nearly gagged.
If Tide Washing Machine cleaner could clean this, they might as well have signed me up to be their next spokeswoman, because I would become a fan for life.
I’ve never been more excited to run my washer.. and since it had to run through the entire cycle there was no peeking allowed. I had to wait until my washer was done. It was like Christmas, I couldn’t wait to open it up and see if my washer was cleaned.
To my disappointment.. it looked the exact same way as it started.
But it smelled better. The mildew smell I had in my washer was gone. Here I was expecting it to work like those dishwasher cleaners but the cleaning happened in all those drain holes.
My washer still needed to be cleaned, so I got out a bucket filled it up with some laundry soap and water and took scrub brush and started tacking the dirt by hand. To my surprise it also loosened the dirt and came off pretty easy.
Remember that photo I nearly gagged on? It was looking pretty good.
Once the scrubbing by hand was done, I just ran the rinse cycle one more time and our washer was so clean!
Overall, I am really satisfied with the results I got from Tide Washing Machine Cleaner despite having to do some scrubbing, It’s been over a week now and I’ve done a bunch of loads already and my mildew smell is still gone and I’m pretty happy about that. I’ve also got a bunch of cleaning packets left and with Tide’s suggestion that I run one a month, maintenance here on out will be easy.

I’ve never used this, but I always leave the lid on the washer open after doing a load of laundry, that way it can air dry, and all the moisture doesn’t stay inside of it. Maybe that would help also with the mildew smell…

That’s a great idea. When we first noticed the smell it was on our towels. I just thought the towels were getting old and needed to be replaced. I’m so glad I found out it was the washer.

I would like to add my 2 cents. Never use fabric softener into your WASHER. You can also make your own laundry detergent and make custom scents.
So this is what I have been doing and it never fails me.
4 cups white vinegar
1/2 cup baking soda
Run yourself a load NORMAL cycle HOT WATER.
I like to do this two times. If you dunno why fabric softener is bad for your washer then you need to go over to YouTube and see some vids. They really gunk things up and it’s really unnecessary. Just use sheets or make your own with special fragrances.
note: If you been using liquid softener for a while. Might want to do this about 4 times. That hot water really loosens all that softener that gets hard and gunky. I have seen some bad washers in my time.
