OZ The Great and Powerful opens up in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013 and I had the luxury to preview this movie with my 9 year old son.
I know several of you are wondering whether or not you should save your money and wait for this movie to come out on DVD or head on out to the theaters.
First let me give you the Synopsis:
Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Theodora as the Witch (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.
“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth, with screen story by Mitchell Kapner and screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Josh Donen and Philip Steuer are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.
Now on to my OZ The Great and Powerful Movie Review:
My 9 year old’s movie review in one word was Awesome! He loved the effects and Finley was one of his favorite characters.
I asked him what he didn’t like and he said the beginning was boring. See in the beginning when Oscar Diggs (James Franco) was in his carnival days, they showed him seducing woman and leading a life of misconduct. The seduction was lies, which were obvious and they showed some kissing, but nothing that would make me cringe over the fact that my child was there.
Could Disney have done without that? I think so, I think they could have show his traits a bit differently. Did my 9 year old believe it was seduction? No. He understood that he was a liar and that was a way that he was trying to get these women to like him. Oscar however does redeem himself, he changes his way and shows he is of good heart.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The 3D effects on OZ The Great and Powerful were amazing and were done really well. There were a few scenes that made me feel like I had to duck. But scenes like that make me really enjoy 3D movies. Even though I enjoyed the movie, I’m not sure if it’s a must see at the theater prices. If you decided to see it in theaters, make sure you see it at Matinee prices. Otherwise I think you’d be OK waiting for it to come out on DVD.

Great review, Gina! And I agree with your thoughts. Those 3D scenes during the tornado were INTENSE and totally made me feel like I had to duck. Two of my kids have already went to see it (opening day) and they loved it.
